Review: Adekunle Gold “Catch Me If You Can” Album
Nigerian singer, songwriter, and figurehead of the trending Highlife sound sweeping the diaspora Adekunle Kosoko, known professionally as Adekunle Gold, has officially released his fourth signature project Titled “Catch Me If You Can”.
Essentially, this is an R&B/Pop album. In its R&B soundscapes, Adekunle excels greatly.
This masterpiece follows his last body of work, “Afropop Vol. 1 “(2020) And consists of 14 songs with star-studded features from Fatoumata Diawara, Ty Dolla Sign, Stefflon Don & Fousheé, Lucky Daye and Davido.
The album gives us a glimpse of his sonic versatility and houses production from many talents. Some of which include: Dawayo, Seyifunmi, TMXO, Blaise Beats, Que Beats, Rymez, Lekaa Beats, Tay Iwar, Pheelz, Spax, Kali, Synematik, and Abayomi Ilerioluwa all contributed.
Three years ago, Adekunle Gold took the next step in his storied career: switching the brand.
Gold found his unique popstar traits with his sense of belonging, created by his own rules. Some of those traits might align with the known pop star stereotype, but it also brims with a sense of difference. Thus at other times, he is Adekunle Gold: warm, nurturing, romantic, reflective and sentimental.
Although he found success with hits like ‘Something Different,’ ‘PAMI,’ ‘AG Baby’ and ‘Okay,’ while his accompanying album, Afro Pop Vol. 1, got an album of the year nod at the 2020 Headies, the real crowning moment of that transition was ‘High’ featuring Davido.
People got so ‘High’ off adlibs, a great chorus and amazing Quotables they forgot their doubt and cynicism towards his transformation. After his initial stylistic transformation, he was AG Baby – which would have been a better title for ‘Afro Pop Vol. 1.’ But since ‘High,’ he has become Bad Boy Deks: a snide potpourri of panache, gusto, personality, love, family and sex. He is also more muscular, more confident and carefree. We love to see it!
