This is the sound that is missing from your playlist to complete your eclectic Spotify playlist.
British Nigerian East London Rapper Ayar has graced us with another EP project Water & Wine 2021. So far, we have been intoxicated with the fortifying sounds of Keeping up with the Neighbours 2020, Rhythms 2018, Love Gold 2018, Patterns 2017, On the Corner 2017 and so much more Ayar’s musical creations will keep you entranced for weeks to come. – Thank me later!
Silver Surfer gives you the 90’s euphoria with the cleverly placed lyrical alignment that pulls you into a reflective meditative state. From yearning change to identifying its predominant factors such as governance & your ability to stay afloat, by strengthening your own spirit “strengthen the core”. Highlighting “script and chalice, malice’s know to the disciple’s home is reliable”. Here we identify that our own heritage, culture and history is where we draw strength from indirectly sending a shot to the religious institution, for ironically enslaving the minds of most that partake in their practices. Almost cynical as the chalice is a symbol of religious freedom from the impositions of doctrine by a hierarchy and openness to participation by all
Power II you, sums up the events that we were experiencing through our digital devices in 2020. Ayar rightfully kicks off the first bridge with “being lockdown stinks” summing the emotions that all listeners can relate to, captivating the moment in which the light seemed dim at the end of the tunnel. Verse two “keeping up with the neighbours, keeping up with the status” this ambiguous statement speaks to our own disconnect with our own true ambitions and the urge to live up to the augmented reality created by those around us and online. Which can be a silent way of co-signing to the illness perpetuated unto individuals. Ayar turns the rest of the second verse into an inward confession, in which he answers this question finding enlightenment “came up trying to be me, came up trying to proceed or nothing at times…” this honest conversation encourages listeners to be real with themselves. Power II you, is literally a check-in session.
Power to those that take the blue pill and are real with themselves.
This EP sets the tone by having an insert of an audio clip describing the journey seeking insight into one’s history of having to travel from Nigeria to the UK, to gather this information. The Jazz, hip hop fusion definitely compliments a dark brandy in hand, the perfect set up to scope the true meaning of the Diaspora. Diaspora is a track that thinks out loud, the inner thirst for knowledge we all have whilst soothing the soul searching listener “out here galloping”, something we are all familiar with being stripped away from the motherland to work a“grave shift”, as Ayar eloquently put it. “sick it wasn’t COVID, G is complicated…” sums up the longing for home, having manifested as sickness as resilience had to be exerted to manage in this averaging Western dialogue
