Femi Kuti & The Positive Force
Femi Kuti is the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He began his musical career playing in his father’s band, Egypt 80.
He started his own band in 1986, Positive Force, was joined by his sisters Yeni and Sola (as the lead dancers) and establishing himself as an artist independent of his father’s massive legacy.
His first record was released in 1989, No Cause for Alarm, (Polygram records) followed by MYOB in 1991 (Kalakuta Records). Four years later he released title Album Femi Kuti under Tabu/ Motown, and in 1998 Shoki Shoki (MCA), which garnered widespread critical acclaim.
He has been nominated for a Grammy award four times in the world music category in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013 but has never won.
On 15 May 2017, Femi Anikulapo Kuti was referred to in the Guinness world records under the catalog of a single note held on a sax in a method called circular breathing . He set the records at 51 min 35 seconds.
Moreover, like his father, Femi has shown a strong commitment to social and political causes throughout his career and continues to fight for a free and fair Nigeria.
